The Sheriff of York has made an request for the Gild of Freemen of the City of York to once again raise their Army for the annual patrol of the City Walls, a tradition steeped in history and community spirit.
The afternoon festivities will commence with a formal reading of the proclamation by none other than the Sheriff of York, Fiona Fitzpatrick, taking place at the Mansion House steps. This ceremonial start sets the tone for the event, highlighting the importance of local governance and heritage. Following the proclamation, the enthusiastic group will embark on a guided tour around the City Walls, accompanied by knowledgeable members of The York Guard and John Oxley MBE, who has dedicated significant time to the preservation of York’s storied past.
The patrol is anticipated to last up to two and a half hours, during which participants will enjoy a scenic route with various stops along the way. One of the highlights will be the visit to Fishergate Postern Tower, which will be open for exploration, offering a unique glimpse into the historical architecture of the city. Additionally, the Red Tower will serve as a convenient stop where refreshments and toilets will be available, ensuring that all attendees are comfortable during the outing.
In an exciting twist this year, we are extending an invitation for all attendees to join us afterwards for a delightful meal at The Old Bank on Lendal. A room has been graciously reserved for our gathering starting at 4:00 PM. Guests can select their meals from The Old Bank’s varied menu, with the convenient option to pay as they order on the day of the event. If you wish to join us for this enjoyable dining experience following the patrol, please email hello@freemenofyork.co.uk to reserve your space before the deadline of 5th April. It promises to be a wonderful opportunity to socialise and reflect on the day’s adventures while enjoying a meal together in the heart of York.
As always, attendees are invited to fully immerse themselves in the enchanting experience of the event and embrace the spirit of the occasion by turning up in stunning Medieval attire that reflects the rich history of that era. Dressing in costume enhances the atmosphere and engages fellow participants; while optional, those who choose to wear such attire will add an extra layer of excitement and authenticity to the festivities. Whether in elegant gowns, regal capes, or knightly armour, attendees will find that their vibrant costumes contribute to a memorable gathering that transports everyone back to a time of chivalry and romance.
